Samoa Cycles

Cycling in Samoa is a unique experience. Good roads connect some of the most idyllic beaches in the world, where you can snorkel amongst world class coral, spot turtles or simply just sit in the water with a beer in hand. Travelling around the big Island of Savaii not only provides moderate cycling goals, it also allows a chance to meet the locals and experience the culture in one of the most traditional settings remaining in the Pacific.

Trips can be designed that are suitable for everyone from families with 10 year old children, to adventure athletes.

Suggestions on where to travel in Samoa

Most people make their first cycle trip around Samoa at tour of the big Island of Savaii and allow 10-14 days.  The typical trip involves 7 days of cycling - with the balance of the time taken up exploring the beaches and experiencing the local culture.  The trip can be done in less time as it is only 200kms around the Island - but the overwhelming feedback (and my experience from cycling it 10 times) is take 10 days as a minimum.  There is just so much to do.

The more populated Island of Upolu (which includes the Capital Apia) is also worth riding and offers some different experiences.  A few groups combine the best of both over about 17 days.

Our Itinerary pages provide more detail on what to expect, how far to travel each day etc as well as day-by-day trip notes.

We also have a booklet on cycle touring Samoa.  See elsewhere on this page to order a copy.

What to expect and what to take

Less than 4 hours by air from Auckland and serviced with daily flights by Air New Zealand and Pacific Blue, Samoa is an easy place to get too. Off season flights are available for $500 return.

Samoa's network of sealed coastal roads, most with very little traffic make it the best pacific island location for cycling. A warm sea with great coral sand beaches and tremendous snorkelling provide plenty to do.

The big remote island of Savaii provides many openings to experience Samoan culture in its more traditional forms. From weaving and cloth-making to dancing and fishing, there is alot to get involved with.

More on how to get to Samoa, what to take and what to expect are covered in our Preparation Page, or better still by the Cycle Samoa booklet.

A typical Day

Waking as the first rays of sunshine sneak through the matting sides of the fale (beach hut), it is time to pull on a pair of togs and head in for a swim. Breakfast in the open sided dining room is usually followed by another quick swim before packing gear in the support vehicle and pedalling off.

If it’s a day on the road there are 2-4 hours in the saddle, but this is regularly broken up with sight-seeing stops and swims. Green coconuts, which have a slight effervescence provide great refreshment along with the mangos and bananas.

By early afternoon you have arrived at the next beach and after a swim, settled in for a relaxed afternoon, a local beer or two, a read and some more swimming. After a pleasant dinner its time to take in the local culture show, or just sit and relax on the beach.
