South America 2006
Ridge Runners South America was the first trip we did and it has lead to the formation of Outdoor.co.nz. It grew out of an idea to take a group of friends back to Peru and Bolivia and show them what we had previously enjoyed. On the trip we ran the Inca Trail in a day, cycled several 4,000m descents (yes start 5,300m up, finish at 1,300m), swam with the Amazon Dolphins and climbed Huayna Potosi, a 6,000m peak. There were 25 people on this trip. Check out the original blog.
We chartered the yacht Spirit of Sydney and sailed from Ushuaia to the Antarctic Peninsula. This was photographers heaven and remains my favorite trip. Kayaking with the whales, staying overnight in an old hut, a two day glacier trip and visiting remote penguin colonies were some of the highlights but the best memories of are standing watches on the drake Passage as we learnt to both sail and to work as a team. Check a few of our favorite photos or the trip blo
This began as another trip to show friends a place we loved and push a few personal boundaries. We began with a mild acclimatisation exercise walking up the Langtang valley and climbing Yala (5,500m) an easy trekkers peak before splitting into smaller groups. Some climbed Naya Khang (5,840m) and crossed the Ganja La , while others walked over Gosainkund. Back in Kathmandu we had a quick trip to ride elephants and collect leeches in Chitwan National Park before running the Annapurna circuit in 7 days. (normally a 17 day trek).
This was a complete change in style with a relaxed easy seven day cycle around Savaii, the big island in Samoa. I never knew that holidays could be so relaxing. Check out the trip report and photos.
In January 2009, Frances and Ross headed over to check out Thailand, Laos and Vietnam for another big, challenging group trip. We had a fascinating time staying in remote villages, zip lining through the forest canopy , cycling and trekking. we also found time to relax in relative luxury aboard a junk in spectacular Halong Bay. We have planned a return trip with some challenging extensions including climbing Fansipan (3,140m and the highest peak in the region) in a day, some big cycle options and extended kayaking and hobie sailing in Halong Bay. Check the photos and trip report.
Intended to be a sailing and kayaking trip for family and friends, a record for the region of 11 days almost without wind made this a stunning tour of tidewater glaciers. Check the photos and trip report.
