Stewart Island/Rakiura

Kayaking, walking, fishing over the new year in one of the most remote parts of New Zealand.

We are returning to Port Pegasus on the south Coast of Stewart Island/Rakiura for a 10 day wilderness adventure over the new year.  This is not  a commercial adventure but a chance to join us on a family trip.

Activities and Location

Port Pegasus is a sheltered harbour on the remote SE coast of Stewart Island  It is several hours by fishing boat from Oban, the main village on the island.

We will be based at a hunters hut from where there is excellent access to walking tracks and great fishing on the doorstep.  We will be taking kayaks and a dinghy with the intention of getting out and visiting as many bays, coves and valleys as we can.  Snorkelers with wetsuits will enjoy the variety of fish and shellfish.

Seals and sea lions are common and you can expect to see a great variety of bird life including kiwis in the wild.

The trip is also about experiencing good camping food and relaxing around a hut.  Much of the fun will also involve baking, cooking up wild food.

Check out last years trip for an idea of what to expect.

Experience and skills required

This is intended as a family grade trip.  There is no requirement to be particularly strong or profficient at anything.  However you will need to be confident at your ability to enjoy an isolated environment with probably no company but our own for 10 days and no chance of walking out for extra supplies.

There will be opportunities for experienced kayakers/trampers to stretch themselves.

Departure details and costs

We depart Bluff at 8am on 27 December 2011.  The core of the trip is 10 days at South Pegasus hut but you should allow at least 14 days as there is plenty to do on Rakiura, including a day on the amazing Ulva Island.

This is shared cost trip.  My first guess at costs (of which the biggest is getting to Port Pegasus and back) is about $1,100 each.  This includes kayak and dinghy hire.  There will be an additional share of food costs.
